MODERN
Advanced Beginning Modern (Jody Weber)
This class is for adult dancers with some experience and a basic understanding of dance vocabulary. The class explores a full understanding of the spine, expanded vocabulary, alignment, and musicality through full bodied phrases. The class will expand the dancer’s qualitative range and investigate nuance and detail for greater depth in performance. Personal feedback, friendly atmosphere !

Intermediate/Advanced Modern (Rebecca Rice)
Classes focus on developing technical, theatrical performers and build strong, musical and organic movers. Influences range from Bill Evans/ Limon-based modern, Gerri Houlihan, Laban Effort Shape & various Pilates and Evan’s-based floor work. Included will be Modern floor barre, standing center barre, full, contemporary movement & new choreographic ideas. Attention to working with challenging rhythms in order to build strong musicality will be stressed as well as attention to movement that builds virtuosity of technique and creative self-expression. Intermediate Modern Technique (Jody Weber) & *Community Performance Group
Intermediate modern is a challenging class for dancers with experience. The class focuses on a deep understanding of the body and incorporates ideas from Limon, Cunningham and Graham techniques. Dancers will move through a warm-up that builds strength and clarifies alignment followed by extended phrases which are rhythmically and physically challenging. The class also focuses on performance quality, focus and presence. Generous atmosphere and live music.
* The performance group rehearses after technique class ends from 7:30-8:30 and is by invitation. Interested dancers should contact the instructor at weberdance@rcn.com

Introduction to Modern (Sarah Mae Gibbons)
Intro to modern dance is a class that looks at modern dance through the methods of technique, improvisation and composition. Each class includes warm-up, floor work and across the floor sequences. In this way we will explore weight, suspension, release, strength, flexibility and creativity. Exercises and combinations encourage comfort and understanding of personal movement vocabulary.

Intermediate/Advanced Modern (Nicole Pierce)
This is a fast-moving class for experienced dancers. We will explore technical problems through a mix of classical & idiosyncratic movement vocabularies. Pierce is known for long phrases of challenging, inventive, textural movement, as well as keen musicality and rhythm. While she enjoys pushing technique and mental acuity, she nurtures an atmosphere of levity and acceptance in order to encourage creative interpretation and the development of one’s own voice. Warm-up is thorough and relevant to the class work. Live guitar, voice & drums by Jerry Bussiere Pierce and accompanist Jerry Bussiere have worked together for over 15 years and enjoy working in unusual rhythms at many tempos. Never the same class twice! Lots of new material every week.

Using the concepts of contract/release, drop/flow, weightedness, and aerial precision, this class consists of floorwork, center work, a barre, and combinations that use the founding principles of modern dance and evolve them to the present. Live music!

Moving Target Series (Various Guest Teachers)
All moving target classes integrate improvisation with technique(s) rooted in pomo/release technique, somatic forms, martial arts, more. Class series is curated by Lauren Simpson and Annie Kloppenberg. We bring fabulous OOT (out-of-town) teachers and EQUALLY FABULOUS in-town teachers. MT is also about developing community around physical inquiry as a shared experience with class givers and class takers. A connective tissue placement class utilizing Marcus’ 47 years of movement principles, to align and revitalize the fascia and muscles, utilizing meridian energies and muscular skeletal exercises. All levels.

MOVEMENT TRAINING & IMPROVISATION
Pilates Mat Class (Helena Chang)
Class will consist of simple, targeted exercises with a deep internal focus, geared
towards making your body stronger, healthier, and more balanced. Results typically
include: heightened body awareness and energy, increased ease/range of movement,
decompression of areas such as the hip flexors and lumbar spine, pain reduction and
effortless improvements in alignment/posture. Non-dancers and dancers are welcome.
Come ready to focus, explore, and discover!
Month of February – Introduction to Pilates Mat: will deliver a bit more instruction
regarding body placement and proper execution of the exercises. Perfect for those who
are new to pilates, new to Helena, and/or coming back from a break!

Prior dance experience is encouraged, but not required! This advanced hip hop class focuses on executing movements with precision, directing power to different parts of the body, and channeling the attitude of the music. Main styles are swagger, romance, and isolation. Be ready to sweat!

West African (Paa Seck)
Yeumougor “Paa” Seck Diery is a dancer from Kaolack, Senegal. He teaches the dances and rhythms called Sabar, the popular dance of Senegal, West Africa. Paa grew up in a griot family and began learning dancing and drumming at age 3 with his father. He has toured and performed in Europe, Japan, United States, and many countries in Africa. His classes start with a thorough warm up, followed by choreography that is broken down section by section, focusing on technique, execution and comprehension of the Sabar rhythms. The class then follows the African Dance Class format of dancing with live drummers. Paa’s style of teaching is clear, clean and precise, filled with the warmth, enthusiasm and the unique stylistic qualities that are found in the traditional and contemporary styles of Sabar. His expertise as a drummer, musician and dance performer make the classes a fun and thorough learning experience. All levels of students are welcome.
